The Surbiton gig I seem to remember that The Sound were supported by The Cardiacs and it was quite a tense atmosphere and when Adrian walked on someone shouted 'Alright fats!' Adrian reacted by taking (OK throwing) off his guitar and jumping off stage and having a fight with this bloke, I also remember that it was a fantastic gig after that.

John H Turner

I was at the Surbiton Assembly Rooms show. It was promoted by my work colleague and was the second day of the first Surbiton Rock Festival. This obviously didn't take off quite like Glastonbury! I can't remember if they were 2 consecutive days or if they were a week apart. I am fairly certain the Cardiacs headlined one day and the Sound did the other. My recollections do not totally agree with those of John H Turner. I don't remember anybody shouting out as mentioned. As I recall it the band were well into their set and there were a couple of people in front of me who were throwing themselves about a bit. Rather than dancing with the crowd they seemed to be getting off on bouncing against the crowd. They were almost 'moshing' and were likely to be causing harm to people around them. Anyhow, Adrian B took umbrage at this , slung his guitar to one side and jumped into the crowd to start pummelling these guys. I am certain the band carried on although I can't remember what the number was. I think the 'moshers' may have been removed by 'security'. Adrian clambered back on stage, strapped his guitar back on and said something like 'if you want to f****** dance then dance, don't fight' and carried on. There was an enormous cheer and the gig moved on to another level. This all happened literally 6 feet in front of me. Fantastic stuff.

Just thought I would justify myself! I hate to disagree with another member of an elite crowd of Sound fans at Surbiton! The Cardiacs were definitely the support band as this was the only gig I ever saw them at and I remember the 'reaction' that they were getting (mixed!). I was interested but the bunch of guys I went with were doing the 'what's all this shit' whilst sitting in the bar The reason I remember this as being Adrian reacting to being called fats was because me and my mate Pete acted it out for weeks (OK years) afterwards, one of us would yell 'Oi Fats!' and the other would take it as an excuse to lay into him. Puerile I know....

Phil we must have been a couple of feet apart in 1984, I was very wild in those days and had a habit of grabbing people round the neck and pogo-ing... Hey maybe we danced together.
